Worksop 1stXI 3-6 Wellingborough
Worksop finished the season with their heads held high despite slipping to an entertaining 6-3 reverse at Valley School. The visitors, having been crowned league champions a week earlier made a lively start and ended any notions that Worksop would be able to conclude their season with a light work out between 2 sides with nothing but pride to play for.
Despite chances at both ends it was Wellingborough who went ahead, a glimpse of things to come, as their short corner specialist unleashed an unstoppable drive into the net giving Walker no chance. Undeterred Worksop continued to press forward with some fluidity through Gorman, Myles and Skinner. It wasn't long before the home side grabbed the equaliser with a short corner of their own, Sam Gawthorpe continuing with his fine form in front of goal, ramming home his own rebound.
With the game ebbing and flowing the visitors again showed why they are league champions with a well worked second, however it was the home side, with a never same die attitude who ended the half stronger and were rewarded when Simon Cardwell finished with aplomb to tie things up at the break.
The second half started as the first had ended at a frenetic pace and it would have been easy for Worksop to collapse when the visitors scored a 3rd and 4th goal in quick succession. However Worksop dug deep and when Cardwell managed to spin and pick out his strike partner Graeme Robinson he finished well to half the advantage. The game continued to entertain with chances at both ends as Worksop searched for the elusive equaliser and in doing so left open the back for Wellingborough to score 2 further goals, again punished by clinical short corner strikes.
Despite the loss Worksop left the field satisfied with a successful 4th place campaign, and only 4 defeats all season, with much to ponder over a well earned summer break.
Man of the Match - Simon Cardwell

Ashby 0-2 Worksop 1stXI
Worksop endured an arduous journey south for their penultimate game of the season and due to lengthy traffic delays were ill prepared for this all important game.
A win for the visitors would have ended any hopes Ashby had of finishing above their fierce Nottinghamshire rivals. As a result the game started at a frenetic pace with both sides attacking at will and exploiting midfield mistakes. However Worksop stood firm with great defensive play from Dan Walker, Sam Taylor and Mike Purnell marshalled brilliantly by the evergreen Geoff Walker. As the half grew the home side began to press further forcing Worksop keeper Phil Walker to make the save of his season. From here Worksop grew in stature and began to create chances of their own. Robinson and Gorman both went close until the deadlock was finally broken as Sam Gawthorpe superbly converted the short corner that he had won himself following fine build up play from the visitors.
The second half began as the first had ended with both sides looking for the all important goal. As the half developed Ashby were frustrated by the outstanding Renny Myles, ably assisted by Skinner in midfield. Both sides continued to press without creating clear chances, however when Robinson was fouled in the D, again up stepped short corner specialist Gawthorpe to rifle his shot into the roof of the net. With the knock out blow delivered Worksop sniffed out any hopes of an Ashby revival with Myles again rock solid in the centre. With time running out Cardwell continued to drive his troops forward until the umpires called time on a competitive encounter and one of Worksop's best performances of the season.
The journey home made all the sweeter with not only 3 points but a well deserved 4th place league finish to cap a terrific campaign for the rejuvenated club.
Man of the Match - Renny Myles
Worksop 2ndXI 5-0 Ashbourne
Worksop returned to winning ways in superb fashion and atoned for last weeks hammering at Wellingborough to see off visitors Ashbourne with a brace apiece from Sam Walter and Richard Baugh and another from James Keeling.
Worksop 1stXI 8-0 Long Buckby Roobo hits Buckby for 4! Worksop made up for last weeks disappointing 8-0 defeat by this week reversing the scoreline by the same margin in their favour. Worksop were soon in the ascendancy as some intelligent passing left the visitors goalkeeper stranded and the ball was switched past him leaving Graeme Robinson with the simplest of tasks to tap the ball home. The second goal was one for the dubious goals committee as Robinson hit a shot which looped up off the keeper before hitting the underside of the crossbar and falling just over the goal line before Richard Baugh could make sure. Worksop continued to dominate and several chances came and went before Robinson claimed his hat trick as some neat inter play between Alistair Skinner and Simon Cardwell allowed Anthony Gorman to selflessly leave Robinson with a simple tap in. The lead was increased before the break when midfield stopper Renny Myles went on a mazy run into the D before coolly slotting the ball into the net from an acute angle. The second half saw Worksop continue to create a plethora of chances and the next goal came as Sam Gawthorpe was on hand to tuck away a rebound from a Skinner drive. Goals 6,7 and 8 then came in quick succession as first Robinson got his fourth of the day dancing through the Long Buckby rearguard before firing home. Then Gorman raced clear to confidently beat the onrushing keeper and then Baugh finally atoned for several glaring misses earlier with a composed finish hard into the corner to complete the rout. Worksop could and should have been well into double figures, with several chances going begging, but whilst not at their best to have recorded a double of two 8-0 victories, both home and away, against their opponents is still something to smile about…. Man of the match - Graeme Robinson Wellingborough 8-0 Worksop 2ndXI Worksop 2ndXI stumbled to their biggest defeat of the season as they were crushed away at Wellingborough. The hosts started the day a place below Worksop in the league but after putting their visitors to the sword, with some examplorary hockey and lethal finishing, they leapfrogged them into 3rd place and in doing so extinguished any last chance Worksop had of an outside promotion chance. Worksop 3rdXI 1-1 Berkswell Another strong performance from the fledgling 3rdXI saw them register a credible draw against the physically stronger and more experienced Berkswell.
Saturday 6th March 2010
It was men against boys as Worksop endured a seriously bad day at the office to suffer their biggest defeat of the season away at Derby Asterdale. The tone for the game was set early on as Worksop found themselves 2-0 down inside the opening 5 minutes after a short corner was converted and a hopeful effort somehow squirmed its way home via a deflection. Other than against the league leaders, Wellingborough, Worksop had not conceded more than 2 goals in any game this season so they had every right to expect they might get back into the game. 3 more goals before half time though soon put paid to any hopes of a comeback. The second half became a damage limitation exercise and Worksop did well to limit the hosts to just 3 more goals to give a final score of 8 without reply. Rather than be too down beat Worksop just need to put this behind them and start again next week. It was simply a case that Worksop had a collective off day and Derby Asterdale were on fire playing the best hockey witnessed this season.. sometimes you just have to hold your hands up and admit you were beaten by the better team! Man of the match - Simon Cardwell Worksop 2ndXI 2-2 Ashby Goals from Ryan Haydon and Les Unwin weren't enough to take all three points as Worksop had to settle for a draw at home to Ashby. Worksop dominated the first half having several short corners and shots saved by the Ashby keeper with Sam Walter going close to putting away a rebound. The opposition didn't have a testing shot on goal before Les Unwin scored his 2nd of the season with a composed finish. The second half Ashby looked the better side with Worksop losing possession far too easily, they grabbed their equalizer midway through the 2nd half with a mistake from the Worksop keeper! Worksop reacted to this and upped their game but had no joy in or around the D. The last 10 minutes of the game Worksop took a risk to win the game by going 3 at the back and having another upfront, but were later caught on the counter attack and conceded a scrappy goal through over committing. In the last 2 minutes though Worksop showed their fighting spirits and scored with a short corner as Ryan Haydon, having missed a couple of shorts in the first half, finally converted with a bullet of strike to pull the game level. A game of 2 half's but Worksop missed their chances in the first half and should have been 3 or 4 up at the break!

Ashby 2-1 Worksop 3rdXI
Worksop 3rds made the journey to Ashby for a late afternoon game with the relative luxury of a squad of 13 players. Too many times this season they have been forced to travel with a threadbare team and the strength in depth showed as they were unlucky not to get something from the game against high flying Ashby.
Worksop 1stXI 1-1 Chaventry It was more a case of 2 points dropped rather than a point gained as Worksop turned in their best performance of the season at home to promotion hopefuls Daventry. Worksop were fast out of the traps winning a short corner inside the first minute which Pete Renshaw fired narrowly wide. Then came the first of the hosts missed chances as Graeme Robinson worked his way free inside the D before squaring the ball to strike partner James Keeling who somehow got his angles all wrong with just the keeper to beat. Worksop were controlling the game with a disciplined display from midfielders Renshaw, Skinner and Cardwell allowing pacy right winger Dan Walker to bomb forward and cause havoc in the visitors half, so it came as a surprise when Daventry took the lead against the run of play. It came as a Worksop attack broke down and they swiftly counter attacked with their lively centre forward carrying the ball a good 50 yards into the D before slipping in his team mate to rifle an unstoppable shot into the roof of the net. Worksop rallied well though and and several chances came and went before The second half saw the game become more end to end but the backline of Keeton, Purnell, Walker and Taylor were dealing well with any Daventry pressure allowing the team a solid base from which to attack. The home fans were almost ready to celebrate as Baugh did fantastically well to make himself space in the D but with the net gaping he somehow spooned his shot well wide of the target. More drama was to follow, as in the dying seconds, yet another free flowing attack resulted in Robinson firing across an inch perfect cross and with the keeper rooted the ball just needed the simplest of touches to claim the victory but Renshaw somehow managed to fire wide as he threw himself into the attempt. Worksop could and probably should have emerged from this enthralling encounter, against one of the leagues best and in form sides, with a deserved victory after missing not one but 4 golden opportunities to take all three points Man of the match - Dan Walker Worksop stuttered to a 3-0 defeat in this top of the table 6 pointer. Despite dominating the first half and forcing several short corners they pressed the self destruct button in the second half and several poor performances, particularly in defence, combined with yet another needless dismissal for Unwin resulted in defeat and leaves themselves with an uphill task if they are to have any outside chance of promotion. Worksop 3rdXI 1-2 Sikh Union ( As the season enters its latter stages Worksop played host to the Sikh Union of Coventry at Valley, aiming to take the points to draw closer to their opponents in the league. It was not to be unfortunately, despite a dogged performance from the home side that saw them dominate a good deal of the possession, particularly in the second half. Worksop managed to field what should have been a strong side, with a decent mixture of talent and experience, with some older faces making a return appearance for the club to combine with the regular youngsters. Worksop started the game on the back foot finding it difficult to keep the skilful Sikhs out of their own half with the ball and although the home defence put in a resolute denial, particularly on the part of youngsters Josh Burns and James Challender. The relentless pressure from the away team's attacking forays led, however, to the inevitable concession of a short corner that the Sikhs duly sent screaming into the net. This wake-up call gave new spirit to the Worksop side and the dynamics of the game shifted much more in the home side's favour for the next period of the match. Attacking link ups between L. Burns, Fuller, Pedley and Smith in particular allowed Worksop to find some momentum when going forward, although the passing in the final sector of the pitch was haphazard and real chances were scant. However, the home side looked to be getting into the game and the paucity of pace in the Sikh's defence would prove to be beneficial to Worksop, most notably on the counter. Gawthorpe junior managed to latch onto a home clearance, whisk the ball through a forward-pushing backline and make a break for the opposing D with the Sikh defence trailing behind even his spurious speed. With only the keeper to beat he went for a thundering strike that landed on target but the Sikh goalie who had probably the game of his life managed to block it superbly. Thankfully for the home side, Worksop skipper Jim 'Teen-Wolf' Worksop pushed for a second and twice again found the back of the net before the halftime whistle blew; both though were disallowed, the first because it was judged not to have touched a stick in the D and the second was dubbed erroneous for Wakefield allegedly having controlled the ball with various protruding sections of his anatomy before tapping it into the goal. To compound the frustration of this, the Sikhs managed to retain the lead with another set-piece short corner that went against the run of play, yet proved unfortunately fruitful for the away team. Worksop largely dominated the second half, continuously fresh legs up front and on the wings allowed them to breakthrough the Sikh's backline again and again. However, by the skill of their excellent keeper were the away side saved just as readily, somehow staving away an equaliser despite the relentless pressure from Worksop. The home side didn't have matters completely their own way however, Worksop youngster and new-found talent Lawrence Horsfall was called upon to deal with some capable forays from the Sikhs and didn't disappoint, making an incredible stop at the nearside post to deny the away side and later keeping a cool head to give the ball a confident kick away when it drifted dangerously into his D and Sikh attackers were nearby. The game ended all too soon for Worksop however, a lack of finishing quality meaning that they couldn't capitalise on a convincing second half performance and take at least a point for their efforts, something that probably would have been a much more representative scoreline for the game. Man of the Match - Atherstone Adders 1-5 Worksop 1stXI Worksop 1stXI made the journey to the Worksop were soon in the ascendancy as after just 2 minutes the ball found its way unchallenged to Graeme Robinson and he had a clear run on goal before coolly slotting the ball past the keeper. Atherstone fought straight back though and were soon on level terms as some quick interpassing resulted in a great finish that keeper Phil Walker could do little to prevent. A mix up in the home defence then presented Robinson with almost a carbon copy of his opening goal as he went through, again unchallenged, to calmly beat the keeper. The third goal followed soon after when a quickly taken sideline ball from fullback Sam Taylor found Robinson and he picked out Keeling who finished perfectly for his debut 1stXI goal. The second half saw Worksop take control of the game more and the hard working midfield and defensive line limited Atherstone to just a few brief trips over the halfway line. They thought they had increased their lead when Pete Renshaw connected well on the edge of the D with a Cardwell pass to audaciously lob the goalkeeper but the goal was disallowed after being branded as dangerous. There was no disputing Worksop's fourth goal when it came as the ball broke to right back Matt Monroe who, after making an attacking foray into the opponents D, rifled in a howitzer of a shot for his first ever career goal. There was still time for Robinson to atone for a glaring miss as he again bamboozled the Adders rearguard to complete his 3rd hat trick of what has so far been an impressive season for the revitalised hitman. Man of the match - Graeme Robinson Worksop 2nd XI 3-0 There was no love lost between these two sides on Valentines weekend as Worksop endured a feisty affair against Goals from Les Unwin (his first for the club), Mackenzie Glasby and Chris Keeton, combined with another clean sheet, were enough to lift Worksop 2ndXI into the lofty heights of second in the league and occupy the second promotion slot to boot. Man of the match - Arthur Nash
Daventry v 3rdXI Worksop were forced to withdraw from the fixture after a ridiculously late start time for the game meant the journey was unfeasible for the young side. As a result Worksop were deducted 3 points which was disappointing against the leagues bottom side.

Worksop 1stXI P-P Notts Trent Uni
Worksop 1stXI endured an unwelcome weekend off as their opponents withdrew from the fixture and subsequently the league on the Friday night before the game. With all the results to date against Notts Trent Uni now being null and void it actually does Worksop a favour and moves them to within 2 points of the promotion places.
Derwent 1-4 Worksop 2ndXI
Worksop started the game in chilly Derwent in dominant fashion and it showed when James Keeling opened the scoring, putting away the rebound off the keeper after a shot from Arthur Nash. Worksop were dominant and never left there half for the first 20 minutes with the ball coming off both wings through Tom Jarvis and Mackenzie Glasby. Keeling added his and Worksop's second when Ray Wakefield threaded the ball through the Derwent defence to Keeling where he slotted the ball through the keepers legs. Worksop kept dominating the game throughout the half until Les Unwin got sent off for descent towards a Derwent player and spent the last 10 min behind the goal.
The second half started the same way as the first with some decent efforts from Unwin and Keeling. Derwent shocked Worksop to make the score 2-1 when keeper Ant Riley made a save onto the inside of the post which somehow crept in. Worksop got there 11 men back and suddenly got their third with Nash winning a goal line scuffle with two other Derwent defenders. With 10 minutes to go Keeling got his third after he neatly swept in a cross from Glasby to be the hat-trick hero.
Man of the match - Arthur Nash
Worksop 3rdXI 1-2
The young Worksop 3rdXI somehow managed to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory as they threw away a comfortable lead, which they had never looked in danger of surrendering, to somehow concede two last minute goals and leave the field empty handed.
They had pretty much dominated and controlled the game throughout and were good value for their lead which was given to them by young Jack Smith firing home well past the keeper for his first goal for the club. Excellent displays from Haydn Parry, who showed real effort and promise, and Smith combined with a man of the match performance from Lawrence Horsfall in goal were the main positives to come from the game.
Man of the match - Lawrence Horsfall

Worksop 1stXI 2-2 Buxton
Two games in as many days proved too much for Worksop as tired legs and minds conspired to turn in yet another poor display at home.
After taking a deserved lead, with an expertly converted short corner by the returning Sam Gawthorpe, Worksop went on to throw away their lead and look like suffering their 3rd defeat of the season until the same player again rescued them with a carbon copy goal with just minutes remaining to earn the home side a draw.
Man of the match - Alistair Skinner
Worksop 2ndXI 4-0 Grantham
Worksop started their second game of the weekend confidently after an impressive win the day before. The home side soon took the lead after five minutes with some good work from Les Unwin setting up Tom Jarvis at the back post to make it 1-0. The half continued in Worksop's favour with a chance falling to James Keeling 2 yards away from goal which somehow he managed to put wide. Ryan Haydon had a good chance from a short corner which he missed by millimetres and which meant the home side were still a goal to the good at half time.
After a positive half time talk from captain Dan Willcock, Jim Wakefield was brought on for Haydon, where he soon made and impact on the game with a simple tap in at the back post to score his first goal for the team. Worksop were taking control of the game where there were chances for Haydon and Keeling which they failed to capitalise from. 10 minutes into the half Haydon was sent off for a disgraceful tackle on the Grantham centre back. Even though the home side were down to ten men they still managed to make it 3-0 with right back Chris Keeton coolly slotting the ball past the keeper and with minutes to go Jarvis made a promising run down the left wind beating two Grantham defenders and entering the D before unselfishly crossing the ball to Wakefield who claimed his second and Worksop's fourth.

Worksop 1stXI 2-1 Grantham
A brace from the mercurial Graeme Robinson spared Worksop's blushes as they turned in their worst performance of the season against local rivals Grantham.
Barring a ten minute spell after Robinson had given them a first half lead, where Worksop should have increased their advantage through Baugh and Lynch, Worksop were largely poor from start to finish.
The only real positive was that they played poorly but still emerged victorious with the 3 points
Man of the match - Alistair Skinner
Worksop 2ndXI 5-1 Rhamgaria
Worksop started the game well with a few good chances in the first couple minutes with Ryan Haydon and James Keeling putting their shots wide. 5 minutes later Keeling opened the scoring with a tap in at the back post made by some good work from Andy Renshaw on the wing. Worksop kept the pressure on and soon won a short corner which Haydon blasted home impressively. Worksop celebrated the goal too long though as Ramgaria capitalised on some slack Worksop defending and made it 2-1. Keeling had a few more good chances to extend the lead but didn't make them count just before the half time whistle. Worksop started the second half alot more focused on the task ahead. The home side soon forced some good saves from the visitor's keeper and soon won their second short of the game which Haydon yet again stuck in the bottom corner. They soon added their forth with a well worked goal between the two Renshaw siblings with Pete threading a ball through to his brother Andy who coolly slotted the ball past the oncoming keeper. Worksop had plenty of more chances to add the fifth but Keeling yet again failed to score. With five minutes to go Tom Jarvis showed good composure by cooling slotting the ball under the keeper after some poor Ramgaria defending to make the final score 5-1 to the home team. Man of the match - Ray Wakefield
Saturday 23rd January 2010
The 1st XI returned to league action, after a snow enhanced break of 7 weeks, to record their first double of the season with an impressive away win at high flying
Understandably rusty, after such a long time without playing, Worksop struggled to get their free flowing hockey, that they are capable of, going but even so they looked to take the game to their opponents and early attempts from Graeme Robinson and the returning Dave Lynch warned the hosts of what was to come. After some resolute defending at the back from Purnell and Myles from a period of
After the break
Worksop were full value for their win after a hard working performance and will only get stronger as the fitness levels return.
Man of the match - Graeme Robinson.
Loughborough Sharks 2-0 Worksop 2ndXI
Worksop started the game against the undefeated league leaders in good spirits after an extended winter break. Worksop had some good chances in the first half with Keeling and Glasby making the Loughborough keeper produce some good saves. The defence was stopping everything that the Sharks threw at it with centre backs Willcock and Haydon leading the way with support from Fletcher and Keeton. Debutant keeper Unwin produced some very good saves in the half to keep the score 0-0 at half time.
The second half started the way the first ended with chances at both ends with Worksop producing there first short corner soon after the break, with Haydon's speed of light shot somehow saved by the impressive Sharks keeper. Loughborough's pressure was building and Worksop's defence was cracked with a questionable short corner awarded. With 10 minutes to go the game was all in Worksop's half and Haydon received a yellow card for descent which didn't help Worksop's charge for an equaliser. The sharks then added their second in the last couple of minutes which put the game to bed.
Overall it was a fantastic performance by the whole team against a Loughborough side that hasn't dropped a point all season
Man of the match - Les Unwin
Worksop 3rdXI 2-0 Leicester Westleigh
The young Worksop 3rdXI continued to show the progression they have made this season with a much deserved 2-0 victory at home to Leicester Westleigh. Goals from Simon Challender and Tom Gawthorpe and a very competent debut from 13 year old Lawrence Horsfall in goal were amongst the highlights.
Wellingborough 5-2 Worksop 1st XI Worksop 1stXI marked the half way point of their season with a defeat at the hands of league leaders Wellingborough. The hosts, boasting more than half of the divisions leading goalscorers in their side, started the match having amassed an average of 10 goals per game. Worksop started much the brighter team though and if Graeme Robinson had reacted quicker to Anthony Gorman's pass into the D they could have taken a surprise lead. As it was Wellingborough soon got into gear and took a two goal lead into the halftime interval, although they had to work hard to get it. After the break Worksop's lack of substitutes started to show with some tired legs in midfield and the hosts started to exert greater pressure on the back 4 and when they converted goals 3,4 and 5 in quick succession. It would have been easy to cave in but instead Worksop regrouped and hit back with first Robinson claiming his 10th of the season after good work from Dan Walker and then a fine solo effort from Gorman, running half the length of the pitch, before coolly rolling the ball past the keeper into the far corner. The home side were visibly rattled but sadly time was against Worksop as the final whistle ended any hopes of a glorious comeback. Worksop go into the festive mid season break having suffered just 2 defeats and with 4 draws and 4 wins have amassed a very credible 16 points. With just 15 goals conceded they also proudly have the second best defence in the division and have come on leaps and bounds from the same time last year. Man of the match - Anthony Gorman

Worksop 1st XI 1-1 Ashby
Worksop maintained their improved run of form this season taking another point, this time with a draw, against a niggly Ashby side.
With only top scorer Sam Gawthorpe missing Worksop started the game with the unusual luxury of 2 subs on the sideline. They were caught napping early doors though and after they stood perplexed, after an obvious decision was not given their way, the visitors raced down the other end and fired home to take what was only a 2nd minute lead. Shell shocked, Worksop sustained a 10 minute period of pressure from Ashby and were fortunate not to fall further behind as a short corner was hit against the crossbar and then another blistering shot was dramatically tipped around the post by keeper Phil Walker. After that though the introduction to the play of midfield stopper, Renny Myles, saw Worksop start to get a grip on the game and Ashby rarely threatened the home goal much again after that.
The second half saw Worksop step it up a gear with Dan Walker and Anthony Gorman, in particular, showing a particular threat down the Worksop right and several crosses were inches from being converted. The visitors were starting to get rattled as Worksop had them on the ropes for the last 20 minutes and several of their players were fortunate to remain on the pitch.
The deserved equalising goal came with just minutes remaining as from a short corner Pete Renshaw intelligently played the ball back to the pusher Graeme Robinson and he expertly diverted the ball into the goal to send the arrogant Ashby back down the M1 with just the point they deserved.
Man of the match - Renny Myles
Worksop 3rd XI 0-1
This week, the fledgling Worksop 3rd XI faced league chasers Tamworth, who were naturally keen to take three points in their push for promotion, whilst Worksop were desperate to take something from the game to shore up their season that has had plenty of excellent performances, but wanted to take some points to finish nowhere near the bottom of the table.
Tamworth proved to be a very strong side going forward as one would imagine from title contenders, and equally tough to break down in midfield. Worksop's defence consisted of regulars Simon and James Challender and Josh Burns with Club Ancient Phil Gawthorpe getting onto the pitch for the first time this season. All had solid performances and the scoreline of only one goal against such a forceful opposition was testament to their resolve, as well as another stunning performance from goalkeeper Gary Bell. Worksop skipper Jim Wakefield and Matt Hayward worked hard in the central midfield, both racing to get tackles in and to try and break forward. Eddy Hibbard offered a powerful driving presence on the left half, whilst young Jed Pedley had another excellent, determined effort on the right, making plenty of useful runs. James Barnes, Kev Ellis and blast from the club's past Simon G tried to make gains up front, James having two notable shots on goal that could easily have beaten the keeper.
Worksop struggled to make too many advantages in the opposition half, yet were defending solidly and with plenty of grit to take the game to a goalless half time score. The second half continued much in the same vein, the Sop defending well, but struggling to break down the resolute Away side going forward. When the
The result was disappointing for the Home side as, again, they had lost narrowly to one of the top sides in the league, despite a gritty, if scrappy performance, and no one can fault the lads for sheer effort. The Christmas break should see an evaluation of the 3rd XI's season so far, with some key home fixtures in particular coming up in the New Year that are certainly capable of yielding some vital points.

Long Buckby 0-8 Worksop 1stXI
Worksop made the long trip to Daventry for the second time in 2 weeks, minus their two leading scorers Gawthorpe and Robinson, as they faced league newcomers Long Buckby.
To say Long Buckby play in the same town as Daventry the two clubs couldn't be more different with Long Buckby being the perfect hosts from the match experience to the hospitality shown afterwards and their neighbours would do well to take a leaf from Buckby's book.
With several changes to the side Worksop took a while to get into gear but once Pete Renshaw swept in Dan Walkers cross, after a fine marauding run from the full back, they never looked back. A great inter passing move followed with Anthony Gorman crossing the ball to Richard Baugh and he selflessly laid off to Renshaw who coolly placed the ball beyond the keepers reach into the bottom corner.
Next came a moment to remember for midfield acrobat Renny Myles as he advanced into the D and placed a great shot into the top corner for his first ever goal for the club. Worksop were pouring forward in ever increasing numbers and goals 4 and 5 came in quick succession as first Gorman's cross come shot deflected past the hapless keeper and then the brilliant Renshaw claimed his hat trick after again sweeping in expertly from another
The second half saw more of the same with Worksop winning countless short corners, through the great passing and movement of the entire team, and it was only the young hosts goalkeeper that prevented a cricket score from amassing. The lead was eventually increased as veteran campaigner Geoff Walker calmly slotted home from a short corner routine and then Gorman got his second of the day lifting over the stranded keeper.
Midfield playmaker Alistair Skinner was most unlucky not to claim a well deserved goal on his return to the side as, after beating 3 men, he advanced into the D and saw his piledriver cannon back off the post and run away to safety. There was still time though for the moustache modelling Baugh to make the scoreline 8-0 as he got the goal his hard work deserved with a crisp finish into the net.
In terms of hockey it was head and shoulders Worksop's best performance of the season to date and a nice confidence booster going into the games against Ashby and Wellingborough.
Man of the match: Pete Renshaw
Berkswell 6-1 Worksop 3rd XI
Once again this season, Worksop's away ventures took a familiar turn when their line-up was significantly reduced to a sparse and inexperienced squad, on this occasion only 10 men being available (and that alone took some last minute dealings).
Berkswell proved to be a resilient and very experienced team, comfortable on the ball, with one exceptional playmaker operating in the middle of the park. Both sides were shocked however when Worksop took an early lead when Tom Jarvis sent a stunning through pass across half the pitch that Haydn Parry picked up in the D and whisked it between the legs of the scrambling Berkswell keeper (his over-exuberant goal celebration unfortunately left him winded on the floor and quite incapable of running for the rest of the game through a bad back). For much of the first half Worksop, having taken their surprise lead looked to hold on to it with some gritty midfield play and dashing defensive work from Simon and James Challender, Jack Smith and Josh Burns. It wasn't to be though, as Berkswell's star man in the middle proved too hot to handle and found a way through the Worksop defence to make it one apiece. A second scrappy goal was conceded before half time. Under the circumstances the away side could be cautiously content with the performance; Worksop went in behind, but far from out of the game, a half time score of 2-1 being an excellent result with a very young, under strength side, against probably the toughest opposition of the season so far.
In the second half though the away side quickly took advantage of the situation with a couple of goals in rapid succession. Worksop, with only ten men, had little to offer up front and the game turned into something of a damage-limitation exercise as heads started to drop. As the half went on Berkswell managed to seal the game with another brace of goals, including one excellent strike from the Home central midfielder that no one could have done anything to stop. Dec Fuller and Tom Jarvis had a few excellent forays into the opposing half, yet, primarily due to numbers, lacked an outlet forward and so could do little to threaten the home side's goal. At the other end of the pitch, Worksop keeper Gary Bell pulled out an amazing performance and that the score line stayed the way it did was almost totally due to his fantastic shot-stopping throughout the second half, which eventually earned him the accolade of man of the match.
Worksop 1st XI 1-2 Worksop's proud record as the leagues only undefeated side was sadly surrendered as they were unfortunate to come out on the wrong end of a keenly contested game against Derby Asterdale. There was a high tempo start to the game from Worksop, as they took advantage of their opponents late arrival, and some good attacking play from Graeme Robinson and Sam Gawthorpe was unfortunate not to result in the lead being taken but Asterdale's defence was on top and their keeper made several brave diving saves. However Worksop were punished 5 minutes before the break for not making their advantage count as a deflection at the back, off a Worksop defenders stick, found its way to the Worksop regrouped at the interval and were back on level times soon after as Gawthorpe's driven short corner deflected up high into the roof of the net. Several more chances fell to the same player from a succession of short corners but a combination of great goalkeeping and defending kept the scores level. Worksop were then again caught by a A very good performance from Worksop, with bags of commitment and effort, in a game where a draw would have been the fair result. Man of the match: Pete Renshaw

Daventry 2-2 Worksop 1stXI
The 1st XI made the arduous trip to the dark and dingy Daventry minus Purnell, Taylor and Skinner. The match got off to an explosive start as Cardwell was dismissed, being shown yellow after reacting badly to having his stick thrown from the field of play by the Daventry left back. Despite Worksop having the majority of the play the home side always looked dangerous on the break and the extra man counted as they had a man over to convert from close range at the back post. Restored back to full strength Worksop took control of the game and won a series of short corners which the dangerous Sam Gawthorpe was unlucky not to score from but Worksop trailed at the half time interval.
Undeterred Worksop equalised immediately after the restart with a well worked goal. Summers found Cardwell in midfield and he turned and advanced into the Daventry half before releasing Gorman down the right and his cross found the lively Richard Baugh to drill low and hard into the corner of the net. The lead was soon restored by Daventry though as they again took advantage of a speedy break to fire in from close range. The home sides over the top celebrations aggravated the visitors and a scrappy period of play followed with various cynical fouls and time wasting tactics by the hosts going unpunished by the officials. Worksop had the last laugh though as their steel shone through and a powerful attack saw Baugh claim his brace as he was on hand to put away the rebound after a Gawthorpe drive had come back off the post.
Worksop remain the only unbeaten side in the league and with 3 key players unavailable, together with the home sides unsportsman like behaviour, all in all it was a good result.
Man of the match - Geoff Walker
Worksop 2ndXI 3-3
Coming into this fixture both sides were joint 2nd in the table having only lost 1 of their past 5 games and the match started very brightly for Worksop with Mackenzie Glasby attacking down the right straight from the off, winning a short corner where Walters shot got blocked. From there the game became very balanced and effectively both sides cancelled each other's attacking opportunities out, Worksop welcomed back the experienced Jeremy Smith into the centre of midfield and he showed the sort of dribbling and creativity he's capable of! Midway through the 1st half, it seemed to be a game that if anyone was to make the 1st mistake would be punished. At that was the case when Worksop failed to deal with the ball in the D and conceded a short corner! This opportunity wasn't wasted by derby, a well taken goal into the goal 0-1. Worksop responded very well playing some very good hockey and looked most of a threat down the right with Glasby and it was his persistency in the D in a scrappy situation that he did manage to square the ball to Sam Walter who had an open goal, and made it 1-1! Half Time 1-1 a fair reflection
2nd half both side shared the posession and looked to be equal but somehow, 7mins into the half Worksop got caught when a derby attacker was missed with a great run and ball into the D. The Worksop keeper stood no chance against a well finished goal into the roof of the net! With the much improved Worksop 2nd XI and never say die attitude, midway in the 2nd half did fight back a got themselves a bit of a lucky goal as Smith made a great run into the D and a diagonal ball that was a cross/shot found its way into the goal! Worksop continued with their attacking tendency continuing to press forward and looked the only team likely to get a winner!
Worksop got their 3rd goal again through a scrappy situation that found its way to James keeling and eventually the ball found the back of the goal. The
Full time 3-3 a very equal game with both sides looking for promotion this season, and will probably be fighting for the same spot!
Man of the Match Anthony Riley
Sikh
After their comfortable win of the previous week, the Worksop side were once again met with a poor showing for away games when they travelled to
Keeper Gary Bell put in a good showing providing leadership from the back, whilst Simon Challender moved with a vigour not suited to his years, roaming across the backline to blunt the Home attack time and time again. He was supported in this by his ever-improving loin-fruit James, as well as Josh Burns who again put in a solid performance and offered up his powerful driving passes down the sideline. Meanwhile, another father/son combination proved invaluable; the unique Alan Nash provided a touch of 'class' at right back, whilst his own offspring, Arthur, worked as a useful playmaker in the middle of the park. Jack Smith's pace and enthusiasm on the left wing again showed his exceptional worth on the pitch in spite of his inexperience, whilst his counterpart on the right, Tom Jarvis' skill on the ball proved difficult for the opposition to handle. Captain Jimmy Wakefield played with his usual energy and 'gamesmanship' (it rarely occurs that a player is propositioned by another on the pitch) whilst Liam Stanswood had the unenviable task of playing as a lone striker, yet stood up to the task admirably, easily earning his post-game smoke; holding the ball up well and being unlucky not to score from a powerful short corner strike.
In a very even game, despite the disparity in numbers, the home side's defence looked increasingly frail and devoid of pace, in stark contrast to the Worksop attack. The Sikhs became increasingly frustrated at not being able to close down the game at only one goal and were crestfallen when Worksop did what they had threatened to do for much of the second half and nicked one back with ten minutes to go. After Wakefield sprinted half the pitch to fetch the ball for the oppositions sideline hit, Josh Burns obligingly intercepted the pass and sent it forwards to Nash junior who played into the D, with Tom Jarvis collecting a well timed pass that he controlled well and nipped past the Sikh keeper who had been the only reason why the goal hadn't come sooner.
Man of the Match: A real team effort but Tom Jarvis for nicking the winner.

1stXI 10-0 Atherstone Adders
Worksops 1st XI went goal crazy as they made up for the previous weeks poor showing in front of goal to record their biggest win for several years.
After leaving it late last week there was to be no such repeat this time out as Worksop took an early lead after Graeme Robinson showed incredible skill to beat 2 defenders and the goalkeeper before forcing the ball home from an impossible angle. Richard Baugh doubled the advantage soon after forcing the ball home after some strong running from Dan Walker. Robinson then completed his first hat trick of the afternoon with two more cool finishes before Sam Gawthorpe got in on the act to give Worksop a convincing 5-0 half time lead.
Atherstone regrouped after the interval and for a while it seemed Worksop would struggle to increase their advantage but after Robinson scored his fourth of the day, finishing off a fine run from Anthony Gorman, the flood gates opened again. Gawthorpe reacted well to put away a rebound from a Baugh drive before claiming his 3rd hat trick of the season moments later with a great individual effort low and hard into the bottom corner. With 2 minutes to go Worksop made it double figures as Robinson completed his second hat trick of the day with first a cool finish after some good wing play from Cardwell and then another superb finish from another ridiculous angle.
A well deserved scoreline, that could have been even greater on another day, sets the team up well for a difficult away fixture next week at Daventry
Man of the match - Graeme Robinson
Worksop travelled the long way to Corby making 4 changes from the previous week, looking an even younger side.
First half started with Corby having a fair share of possession with Worksop finding it a little difficult to stamp their authority on to the game and play the sort of hockey they have been playing in past weeks! On 20 and 25 minutes Corby were awarded short corners and on both occasions the Worksop defence defended well and cleared the danger. In between the short corners for Corby Sam Walter was just about to shoot into an open goal but looked to be deliberately brought down by the Corby keeper who had no intensions to play the ball, Worksop felt they should have been awarded a penalty flick, but nothing was given! As the first half progressed Worksop grew more into the game with Sam Walter and Luke Burns looking a threat in the opposing D but were yet to beat the Corby defence! To be level at half time was a fair reflection of the first half.
In the second half Worksop came out the blocks the quickest and started to play some good hockey especially down the right through Andy Renshaw linking up well with the front men. Midway in the 2nd half Worksop looked to be more attacking and the game becoming very open and were caught on the break with Corby earning a short corner but again this came to nothing! Just after the dead lock was broken with Andy Renshaw setting up the late call up into the side Luke Burns to get a well deserved goal.
Worksop continued to defend well and there looked no way through for the Corby side despite some poor umpiring throughout the game. With decisions being missed in the 2nd half the game got heated from pure frustration from Worksop, this ended up with Worksop going down to 10 men in the late stages with Richard Needham seeing yellow for the 1st time in his 18 years at the club, he was adjudged to have blocked the speedy taking of a free hit on the half way! This seemed very harsh but despite this Worksop saw the game through!
A hard fought victory against a much improved Corby side from last season.
Man of the Match - Luke Burns
3rd XI 4-0 Daventry This week saw the stalwart Worksop 3rds finally claim the result that their performances so far this season have merited, climbing two places in the table with their unfortunate opposition (who struggled to put 11 players on the pitch) now gracing the bottom spot. A stunning hat trick performance from experienced Worksop midfielder Jez Smith, returning from injury, complemented a solid defensive lineup in the form of veterans Simon Challender and Ed Hibbard and the (much) more youthful James Challender and Josh Burns. Worksop captain Jim Wakefield offered his usual unique brand of energy and pace in the middle. Tom Gawthorpe provided a safe pair of hands on the wing, whilst his counterpart on the opposite side, Dec Fuller, created considerable space and scoring potential, taking the ball round the opposition at every available opportunity. Up front Tom Jarvis was equally adept at carrying the ball past defenders into the D and was unlucky not to bag a goal himself with a lifted shot that sailed just over the crossbar. His strike partner; Jed Pedley had a fantastic game, his off the ball movement and holding ability proving a great asset, the youngster's enthusiasm and spirit being rewarded with a true striker's finish that took the score to 3-0. He was also unlucky not to get a second when he directed a snapshot cross scant inches wide of the post. With a well deserved victory under their belt, things can only get better for the Worksop boys, hopefully with their performances being translated into results on a more regular basis. Man of the match - Jed Pedley

Notts Trent Uni 1-1 1stXI
Despite Notts Trent Uni only having 3 shots at goal all game they had taken the lead in the first half with a sublime goal that smashed off both posts before nestling in the back of the net. Worksop were really not at the races and despite dominating the play struggled to turn hard work and endeavour into any real goal scoring opportunities. With the majority of the decisions going against them, down to 10 men after Robinson was dismissed and with the clock ticking down it looked like Worksop would suffer their first defeat of the season. However a fired up Robinson returned to the play with 2 minutes to go and dribbled past 4 challenges before feeding Cardwell down the right and he picked out Gawthorpe in the centre for a crisp finish to give Worksop a dramatic equaliser that they fully deserved.
Man of the match - Sam Gawthorpe
An absentee beset Worksop were on the road to
The third goal for Newark, early in the second half came under similar circumstances, constantly rolling substitutes making matters even more difficult for Worksop, yet much of the half was spent with the home team on the defensive, with the away midfield finding plenty of space and time around the opposition D, yet struggling to get a clear shot past the numerically superior Newark. Although something of a consolation goal at this point, the Worksop goal was well worked and had been coming for some time; decent interplay from the centre of the park going out wide to Dec Fuller on the right who sent in an excellent cross that was latched onto and converted by Haydn Parry, getting his first goal for the club, who had been given the thankless task of lone striker. Worksop could even have closed the gap further but for some near misses on goal. The fourth Newark goal was unfortunate for the away side indeed; a wayward clearance from skipper Jim Wakefield somehow ending up on the penalty spot right in front of a Newark striker.
With equal numbers, the result would almost certainly have been very different indeed and the Worksop boys can't wait for the return fixture that should be a complete turnaround.

Grantham 2-7 Worksop 1stXI
The 1st XI made it back to back league victories with a win at Grantham.
Facing a Grantham side who had last week recorded their first victory in 3 years Worksop faced a revigorated and more confident opponent than they would normally expect. They weren't long in taking the lead though as Alistair Skinner intelligently lifted the ball over the floored keeper after he had saved the initial Sam Gawthorpe effort on goal from a Worksop short corner. Gawthorpe scored a text book dragflick from the next short corner soon after for his first of the day. Graeme Robinson then punished some slack defending as he fired in low and hard from a tricky angle.Undeterred from going behind Grantham continued to counter attack and it was no real surprise when they managed to break with men over and tap in from close range. Another exemplorary short corner routine though saw Worksop regain their 3 goal advantage just before the break as the lively Gawthorpe finished well yet again.
Grantham came out much the stronger side in the second half and didn't take long in pulling another goal back. This served to give Worksop a wake up though and inspired by the introduction of Dan Walker, making his 1stXI debut, they went on to control the final 20 minute period with close range goals for Baugh, Dan Walker and finally Gawthorpe completing his second hat trick in as many weeks.
Worksop have already amassed as many points in the first 3 games this season as they did in the entire season last year!
Man of the match - Dan Walker
Rhamgaria 0-6 Worksop 2ndXI
The game started in a very high tempo with Worksop setting out a stall of attacks, with 3 short corners in the opening 10 minutes. They soon got their reward from the youngest player on the pitch, Arthur Nash, after 20 minutes with a very composed finish! Shortly after Sam Walter scored with a great strike from a very well worked short corner.. Worksop did continue to attack with some fine passing through the midfield and linking up extremely well with Mackenzie Glasby, this created an opportunity for Andy Renshaw to make a run into the D and make a cross/shot that found the goal, it wasn't intended but well deserved, half time 0-3.
Second half, again Worksop came out the blocks the fastest and just continued to attack with wing back Matt Monroe getting forward and creating problems with a cross field ball which found its way to Sam Walter to slot under the keeper. There was no sign of Worksop stepping off the gas even with a facial injury to Chris Keeton midway through the second half.
Worksop continued to attack with Mackenzie Glasby playing a pivotal role throughout the game causing the Rhamgarian defence no end of problems, one of these attacks found its way to James Keeling for him to steer past the keeper. With Sam Walter trying desperately to get his hat trick, an opportunity arose with a short corner being the last play of the game, and luck should have it the ball found the back of the net for 0-6 a well deserved Hat Trick!
This game was dominated by Worksop from start to finish, with Rhamgaria only entering the Worksop D once throughout the entire game, leaving the Worksop keeper Anthony Riley not having to touch the ball once all game! Yet again another great team performance
Man of the match - Mackenzie Glasby

Worksop 1stXI 5-1
The 1st XI continued to show the progress they have made from last season with a convincing 5-1 win over
Playing their first home game of the season at the Valley Worksop dominated the game from start to finish although they had to wait 15 minutes for their first goal. It was worth the wait though as Sam Gawthorpe latched onto the end of a pacy through ball from Robinson to keep his feet and skilfully tuck the ball beneath the onrushing keeper for the goal of the day. Continued pressure and attempts on goal, particularly from the impressive Robinson, were rewarded just before the interval as Gawthorpe got his second with a textbook drag flick into the top of the net from a short corner routine.
Worksop continued the second half in much the same fashion and Gawthorpe soon completed his hat trick putting away the rebound after the keeper had parried Geoff Walkers attempt on goal. Defender James Keeton, making an uncustomary venture into the opponents D, was most unfortunate not to score a rare goal with an audacious solo effort before Alistair Skinner was rewarded for his hard work as he swept into the net from a Summers pass. Robinson finally got a deserved goal to complete the scoring as he neatly finished a lay off from the selfless Gawthorpe.
Only a momentary lapse towards the end, from the otherwise faultless defence, saw
Worksop took just 1 point from 12 against Buxton and Kettering last season and so to have 4 from 6 already this season shows just how far the team has come.
Man of the match - Tied between James Keeton and Sam Taylor.
2ndXI 1-4 Loughborough Sharks
The first home league game, saw a very strong Sharks team travel to the valley. From the previous weeks result Worksop knew that this would be a very different game to the one they had against Grantham,
From the off Worksop struggled to get any control of the ball and string passes together, and after 7 minutes the dead lock was broken when the Worksop defence got out numbered with the Shark's players and the ball found the back of the net. That was a wakeup call for the Worksop players that they could take their defensive responsibilities for granted! For the rest of the first half Worksop did more than match the sharks with a good chance falling to Dan Walker.
Just 10mins into the second half Worksop conceded another sloppy goal yet again but from this Worksop responded exceptionally well, really digging deep to play their best hockey of the game. Half way through the 2nd half Worksop won themselves a short corner that Sam Walter struck just inside the D towards goal with the ball deflecting past the shark's keeper for a goal that Worksop richly deserved.
Shortly after one of the Shark's players was yellow carded for decent shown to the umpire, so the sharks played with 10 men but Worksop continued to attack but could not find a way through the Sharks defence. Through the over committing of the Worksop players trying desperately to get an equaliser they conceded 2 late goals…
The Final score 1-4 did not represent the balance of the game, and the Sharks are definite promotion material this season. But all in all great effort from the boys against a very good opposition!
Man of the Match - Pete Renshaw
Buxton 1-1 Worksop 1st XI Worksop's 1stXI got the new league season underway with a hard fought point away at Buxton. Buxton is never a nice place to go and the weather in Buxton was true to form with the game being played in gale force wind and rain and the usual arctic temperatures. Worksop struggled to get going in the first half and adapt to the conditions, creating very little, and it was no surprise that they entered the half time interval a goal down after a poor defensive clearance fell to a Buxton forward who bundled the ball into the net. The second half saw Worksop regroup and after getting to grips with the bouncy pitch they proceeded to grow in confidence from there on in. The deserved equalising goal came after good work in the midfield from Summers and Gawthorpe released Cardwell down the right and his cross was placed into the Buxton goal with great precision by Richard Baugh. Despite their dominance Worksop didn't really manage to carve out any more clear opportunities and as it was the draw was a fair result in a game of two halves. Man of the match - Will Summers Grantham 1-6 Worksop 2nd XI Straight from the push back Worksop played into a very strong wind, with a high tempo and passed the ball very well across the back and throughout the midfield! 3 minutes into the game Worksop showed their attacking intent and won a short corner, where a Sam Walter's shot came to nothing, after 7 minutes Dan walker broke from the right back position beating 3 Grantham players played a ball into the d that found Arthur Nash to steer into the net 1-0 Worksop! A Grantham short corner soon after saw the ball accidentally striking Chris Keeton on the foot resulting in a penalty flick which was scored with Anthony Riley getting very close to saving 1-1! Worksop continued to dominate the rest of the first half with Richard Needham and Pete Renshaw dominating the midfield providing great outlet to the wings for Nash and Andy Renshaw to get forward and beat players with their skill! At half time Worksop felt a little disappointed with the score being level. The second half started with 3 short corners in the space of 8 minutes with Sam Walter striking wide on 2 occasions followed up with some great hockey. A swift counter attack saw James Keeling receive the ball and score past the outrushing Grantham keeper for 2-1. From then on Worksop continued to have chance after chance and with 15 minutes to go Worksop continued to attack with centre half Chris Keeton getting forward and grabbing himself a goal from a sideline ball to make it 3-1. There was no sign of Worksop taking their foot of the gas and continued to attack scoring 3 goals in the last 7 minutes with first Pete Renshaw topping off a great performance to make it 4-1. Then the frustration finally paid off for Sam Walter by scoring the last 2 goals to make it 6-1. Despite a single short corner in the 2nd half for Grantham, Worksop keeper Anthony Riley was very much a spectator without having to touch the ball. Some great Hockey played and a great result for the boys! Man of the match: Richard Needham

Worksop 1st XI 5-0
The 1st XI finished their pre season programme in style with a competent victory against neighbouring side Mansfield.
Reinforced by new summer recruits Robinson, Summers and Myles they got off to a great start as Gawthorpe found Gorman in the D and he fired low and hard into the bottom corner for the first. Continued pressure and attempts on goal were rewarded just before the interval as Robinson beat 3 men to claim his first of the day.
Worksop had been unfortunate in their previous warm up matches not to complete a hat trick of victories, having led all 3 matches at the half time mark, but lack of composure and ultimately fitness saw them end up the loosing side. This wasn't to be the case against
Graeme Robinson scored 2 more sublime goals to claim his hat trick and the victory was completed with a neat finish from debutant Richard Baugh
Worksop can now look forward to the start of the league season this week with renewed confidence and optimism after last years transitional season.
Man of the match - Anthony Gorman.
